The First Degree Tracing Board - Part II
In the representation of the First Degree Tracing Board found in Scottish Constitution Lodges the 'Perfect Lodge' is surrounded by a tesselated border. At various times this has been represented in different forms. Early representations show this as a cord with tassels appended. In strict interpretation there should be four tassels, representing the four cardinal virtues, "...let Prudence direct you, Temperance chasten you, Fortitude support you and Justice be the guide of all your actions."
Although the reference is usually given as tesselated, it might be more properly called the tasselated or tasseled border and the cord represents the bond by which every Freemason ought to be united to his Brethren,
While most modern tracing boards omit the cord, the image is however framed by an indented black and white border. Either this is a stylized representation of intertwined black and white cords, or the tesselated border is a meant to represent the tesserae of a mosaic inlay from whence the term might also be derived.
